Nutrition and Health

There is no doubt that what we eat affects both our short and long term health and wellbeing. We need to eat a variety of different foods every day to ensure we obtain all the essential nutrients, needed to grow and stay healthy. Eating well, however, is only one element of a healthy lifestyle. Other things we can do to maintain good health include:

  • being physically active
  • not smoking
  • adequate hydration
  • if you drink alcohol, staying within the recommended limits
  • taking "time out" for relaxation

There are many specific disorders/diseases in which diet plays a causative or preventative role and evidence is finding links to more almost every day.

  • obesity
  • bowel disorders such as diverticulitis; constipation
  • osteoporosis
